For me, the lighthouse (and this one in particular) has always been a kind of anchor. Whether I’m walking along the beach, strolling the boulevard, or floating in the sea, it serves as a reference point. Coming home after a trip and driving along the beach road, catching a glimpse of the tower - it’s a comforting sight.
When I had just moved to Scheveningen, the lighthouse was being renovated and was completely covered. It really looked… odd. Luckily, after all the work, the lighthouse was uncovered and once again stands proud against the sky! A powerful form, and when it’s dark and the lights shine across the beach, it gives me a magical feeling. Sometimes the moon rises behind it… sigh! :))
This year, the iconic Scheveningen Lighthouse celebrates its 150th anniversary.
A beacon of light, pride, and history on the coast - for one and a half centuries. For this special milestone, I created an original pen drawing in black and white, with a subtle addition of red and gold watercolor in some editions.
