naughty seagull series
Seagulls doing naughty things. Have you seen them?
In the autumn of 2022, I was on the coast of Devon, UK. With Jack (my converted campervan) and Mark, we stayed on an empty campsite, overlooking the sea and surrounded by seagulls. Naughty Seagulls! It was hilarious to watch them trying to snatch my BBQ one morning. That’s when the #naughtyseagullseries was born.
What struck me was how a creature from nature comes so directly into contact with people and our strange habits. What we find funny or annoying—a seagull stealing food—actually stems from our own behavior. We take over their environment, we leave food behind, and so their primal instinct (“I see it, I want to eat it”) shows up in new, sometimes absurd ways.
I find seagulls to be beautiful animals. I can spend hours watching one hover in the wind. To me, they are a mirror: a reminder that we share this world with other beings, and that their “naughtiness” is often a reflection of how we interact with nature.
Do you have a fun seagull story? I’d love to hear it!
