Sardines, pilchards or pilchards are a group of ray-finned fish from the herring family (Clupeidae). Sardines are found almost worldwide.
According to some, they owe their name to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia where the fish was common. Others doubt that the Greeks, who already referred to this fish with a related word, would name it after a remote island. An alternative explanation is that the fish owes its name to the color of its flesh, which resembles that of the quartz species Sardonyx, which occurs near Greece.
