In the summer of 2022, I visited relatives in California. My second home. Ever since I was a little girl I watched the waves on the rough coast and hoped to one day be able to surf here.
My cousin and her family live about a 30 minute drive from one of the most famous spots in the world in Santa Cruz, overlooking Jack O'Neill's old house. As soon as you enter the area on the coast you will see surfers walking in the streets, on bicycles and road signs with the title 'crossing groms'.
I felt at home here this summer. I felt less insecure every day I went surfing. I avoided the weekends because of the 'weekenders' and went surfing with local heroes during the week.
Truly surfed one of my best waves here, but just the experience in the water gave me goosebumps. My dream came true and I walked my own 'grom walk'. I felt grounded; the gravity. Also a nod to the song by John Mayer, who I have also had the pleasure of admiring here in his home country.
I feel like a grateful person, even now that I'm writing this down again...I can keep going! :) Memories for life.
